Hellaby Embroideries
"These twelve framed embroidery scenes that were sewn by ‘Old’ (as she was known) Mrs. Hellaby who lived from 1858 to 1959, for the most time in what was then called The White House Note: There is now a ‘White House’ in Main Street but the one being referenced now was in Church Road, known as Hellaby Cottage. Mary Hellaby (known as Jimmy as her parents always wanted a son) was my Godmother and I have very fond memories of Hellaby Cottage, especially the garden.
My grandparents Frank and Kathleen Durose lived in the Mill House between approximately 1925-1960 and were of course, neighbours to the Hellaby family of Mr and Mrs. H., Catherine, Nancy and Mary. They all became good friends over the years which is why Mary (Jimmy) became my Godmother. Old Mrs. Hellaby used to regularly give the pictures to Kathleen."
